Why Study Vocabulary?
Words are the tools we use to think, learn, and communicate. A stronger vocabulary helps students:
- Understand more of what they read
- Think more clearly about new ideas
- Express themselves more precisely
Words help an artist describe the right shade of blue. They help a student understand a difficult passage, and they help a leader formulate and share a vision.
Vocabulary can also affect confidence. A student who recognizes important words is more likely to feel that a challenging text is within reach.
Much vocabulary growth comes from reading. Students meet new words in context, see familiar words used in new ways, and gradually build a richer understanding of language.
That is why this site focuses on words from literature. The goal is to help students notice useful words, understand them in context, and meet them again as they continue reading.
