There are two main types of cholesterol:
HDL (good cholesterol) is thought to offer some protection from heart disease.
LDL (bad cholesterol) is thought to cause heart disease by encouraging plaque build-up on arteries (atherosclerosis).
HDL stands for "high-density lipoproteins" while LDL stands for "low-density lipoproteins".
