Both Uses of
The Devil and Daniel Webster
Uses with a very common or rare meaning:
- For there wasn't any doubt as to the deed or the signature--that was the worst of it.†
- One and all, they came into the room with the fires of hell still upon them, and the stranger named their names and their deeds as they came, till the tale of twelve was told.†
(meaning too common or rare to warrant focus) More commonly, deed refers to a notable achievement --as in "She did a good deed."
