(1)
(Mach as in: Mach-one) a measure of speed relative to the speed of sound (approximately 767 mph at sea level); Mach 1 equals the speed of sound, Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound, and so onNamed after Austrian physicist Ernst Mach. Aircraft exceeding Mach 1 (supersonic flight) create sonic booms—the explosive sound of compressed air shock waves trailing the aircraft. This is why supersonic flight over land is often restricted. Military jets can reach Mach 3+.

(2)
(meaning too rare to warrant focus) Less commonly, Mach can refer to anyone with that last name--including the Austrian who introduced Mach numbers as a measurement of speed.
