Definition:
William Golding's acclaimed novel (with well-known film adaptations); an allegory of boys stranded on an island who, without civilizing influences, sink into savagery (1955)
The title references the name the boys give to a sow's head they impale on a stake and erect as an offering to the “beast.” It is thought that Golding chose the name in reference to the Hebrew name Beelzebub (which translates literally as "Lord of Flies"), a name sometimes used as a synonym for Satan.
