This quiz asks students to use sentence context to choose each word's meaning. It reinforces vocabulary as students encounter it while reading: in context, not as isolated definitions.

Top-ranked words are selected for text frequency, grade-level challenge, academic usefulness, and importance to understanding the text. Hand-edited texts can better account for importance to comprehension and especially memorable or meaningful passages.

Post-reading quizzes double as a quick review because examples appear in book order. Most selected words should be partly familiar to students; strong readers may prefer the extra-credit quiz.

The computer does a reasonable job of selecting words, sample sentences, and wrong answers, but human-edited quizzes are usually stronger and may be much better for classroom use. Let us know if you would like this book human-edited for a class.
