Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, making them prone to fractures from minor falls or even everyday activities. It is often called a "silent disease" because it typically has no symptoms until a bone breaks, most commonly in the hip, spine, or wrist.

The disease develops gradually over many years as bones lose density and strength. Doctors can measure bone density through a DEXA scan to diagnose osteoporosis before fractures occur, and screening is often recommended for older adults, particularly women over 65. Postmenopausal women are at highest risk because declining estrogen levels accelerate bone loss.

Prevention strategies include getting adequate calcium and vitamin D, engaging in weight-bearing exercise, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and in some cases taking medication to slow bone loss.
