What are the justifications for legal punishment?
  Retribution - a sense of justice for victims

Restitution - reimbursing the victim for losses (damages)

Rehabilitation - not intended as a punishment, but probably perceived as such

Personal (Direct) Deterrence - remove from society, so can’t harm others

Social (Indirect) Deterrence - make an example to deter others (as in punitive damages)
