SAT is short of SAT Reasoning Test. The 4 hour test results in different scores for critical reading, mathematics, and writing. Each score is between 200 and 800. Many colleges consider the test a good indicator of how prepared a student is for college work.
People typically abbreviate the SAT Reasoning Test as just SAT. It is also called the SAT I because there are also SAT II tests — each of which measures mastery of a single subject taught in school.
