touchback (football)

(American football) 3 things must happen to have a touchback:

1. the offensive team causes the ball to cross into the defensive team’s end zone

2. the defensive team gains possession of the ball

3. the defensive team touches the ball to the ground (or is tackled) prior to leaving the end zone

After the touchback, the team that was playing defense gets a first down at their own 20 yard line.
