Jim Thorpe

  outstanding Native American athlete in football, basketball, baseball, track & field, and other sports; won Olympic gold in both the pentathlon and the decathlon (1888-1953)

In 1950, the Associated Press named him the greatest athlete of the century. In 1999, they still named him as #3.
