International basketball doesn’t follow the NBA goaltending rule.
basketball: interference with a shot by:
Touching the ball while the ball: 1. is on its downward trajectory toward the basket 2. has touched the backboard and is moving toward the basket 3. is/has bounced above the rim and has a chance of falling into the basket
When goaltending is called, the points are awarded and the game is continued as though the basket was made.
Most spectators also refer to "basket interference" as goaltending. Basket interference applies to defensive or offensive players except for those performing a dunk. It is:
1. touching the ball or the basket while the ball is either a. on the rim of the basket b. within the cylinder extending upwards from the rim 2. reaching up through the basket and touching the ball 3. pulling down on the rim of the basket so that it contacts the ball before returning to its original position
