centripetal force

When most people think of centrifugal force, physicists think of centripetal force.
physics:  the force that causes something to move inward as it moves in a curved path around another body

Strongly Associated with:   centrifugal force
An object can travel in a circle only if there is a centripetal force on it.

Centrifugal force is sometimes called a fictitious force because when most people talk about centrifugal force pulling outward, they are really talking about the centripetal force that keeps the object from flying outward. The object is just trying to follow a straight line at every instant (and would) were it not for the centripetal force holding it in place.
