red giant red giants
A very large, distended, and relatively cool star which is in the final stages of its life. A typical red giant, if placed where the Sun is in our solar system, might extend past the orbit of Mars. The relatively cool temperature of its outer layers (perhaps only 2,000 degrees Celsius as compared to the Sun’s 6,000 degrees) would make it look orange or red instead of yellowish-white. (The Sun is predicted to become a Red Giant about 5 billion years from now.)
