five pillars of Islam

Visiting Mecca is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Sunni Muslims use this term to reference five ritual obligations:

1. Recite the profession of faith - "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Prophet of God" - each day

2. pray five times a day

3. charity (via zakat - a form of wealth taxation) for the poor

4. refrain from eating, drinking, tobacco, and sexual relations from daybreak to sunset during the month of Ramadan

5. make the pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca at least once in a lifetime (unless prevented by poverty or illness)
