The disease formerly known as adult-onset diabetes has had to be renamed Type II diabetes since it now occurs so frequently in children, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates that one in three American children born in 2000 will develop it.

Type 2 diabetes has no symptoms in the early stages. It is usually diagnosed by tests that indicate glucose intolerance, and is treated with changes in diet and an exercise regimen. Previously called "adult onset diabetes" or "non-insulin-dependent diabetes".
