  a series of events during the time that Iran held American hostages which is often summarized as "arms for hostages"; the U.S. attempted to solidify relations with moderate Iranians by selling weapons to them during an Iran/Iraq war and high U.S. officials broke the law by using some of the arms payments to support Contra rebels in Nicaragua (1984-1986)
