Also called "The First Arab-Israeli War."

Palestine encompassed land that, in antiquity, belonged to the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The land was controlled by the Ottoman Emprire prior to their defeat with Germany in the First World War. Following that war, the area was administered by Great Britain. It contained many Jews and many more Arabs.

During and following the Second World War, many Jews wanted to move to Palestine to escape persecution. Because of civil unrest in Palestine, Great Britain prevented hundreds of thousands of Jews from immigrating there. Jews still increased to about 30% of the population. Great Britain’s felt political and financial pressure from pro-Jewish and pro-Arab groups. It expressed a desire to turn control over to the United Nations.

The United Nations voted that Palestine should be divided so it could support Arab and Jewish states side-by-side. Israel declared its independence and was attacked by five Arab states. Israel was successful in defending itself. Though no new Arab state was formed. the West Bank was taken by Jordan and the Gaza strip was taken by Egypt.
