For example, "Negroes must make annual contracts for their labor in writing; if they should run away from their tasks, they forfeited their wages for the year. ... Fugitives from labor were to be arrested and carried back to their employers."

Do not confuse these laws with the Jim Crow laws that came much later. These laws could be said to have attempted to maintain quasi-slavery; while the Jim Crow laws were primarily concerned with segregation.
