Concept Mastery:  Winter solstice day falls on different dates depending upon the year, but in the northern hemisphere this is about December 21st and in the southern hemisphere it is about June 21st.

Note the time of the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, is the time of the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere.

Cultures throughout history have celebrated the solstices and architecture as varied as Egyptian tombs and Stonehenge was designed to take advantage of the sun’s position during solstices.
