Notes:
When one refers to "The Amazon," the may be to the river or to the rainforest that surrounds it.

The Amazon River begins in the Andes and flows eastward into the South Atlantic. Some think that when more accurate measurements are available, the Amazon will prove to be longer than the Nile and thus the longest river in the world.
