The Mediterranean Sea was very important to early trade. It connects to the Atlantic via the Strait of Gibraltar, the Black Sea via Bosporus, and the Red Sea via the Suez Canal.

It has limited exchange of deep water with outer oceans. The water circulation is dominated by salinity and temperature differences rather than winds.
