An El Niņo event is generally starts off the coast of Ecuador and Peru at Christmas time. (Hence the name which literally translates as "the little boy" in reference to Jesus’ birth.)   A major event generally occurs every 3 to 7 years and is associated with changes in the weather patterns worldwide.
