  President Truman’s policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or totalitarian ideology (introduced in 1947)

Specifically, the United States said it would support "free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures."  Initially, focus was on supporting Greece and Turkey economically and militarily to prevent Soviet dominance over those nations.
