Historical Context:  This references the Biblical story (Acts 1-30) of the conversion of Saul to Christianity. Saul was on the road traveling to Damascus to extend his persecution of Christians. He was blinded by a brilliant light and heard the voice of Christ. He converted to Christianity and became the apostle Paul.
