The belts are caused by the interaction between the Earth’s magnetic field and the solar wind (stream of ions, electrically charged particles, that are given emitted by the sun). The particles (plasma) is trapped by the Earth’s magnetosphere. When stray particles from these belts collide with air, they fluoresce, causing the polar aurora.
