Notes:
Global warming is a controversial topic due to its political and economic implications. Most experts agree that the Earth is going through another warming phase and that human activity is contributing to the warming this time, but there is much disagreement about how bad it will get and what to do about it.

The Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that the Earth’s surface temperature rose over 1F during the 20th century. There is less agreement on what the next 100 years will bring, but a higher rate of increase is projected.  Other reports indicate that the ocean has risen 4 to 8 inches due to thermal warming and some believe ice sheets (currently on land) could melt and raise the sea much higher.

Greenhouse gas emission and changes in land use are thought to be major influences. There is much dispute about how governments should react to global warming since many proposed actions would be so expensive. Some believe global warming is the moral challenge of our time. Others believe we should not focus so much on global warming that we spend resources on it that could be better spent on fighting disease, building infrastructure, or raising world living standards.

Another complication is the uneven effect of global warming. While all regions have infrastructure and practices that would be disrupted by different weather and all could be harmed by the more severe weather patterns some predict; some regions could actually benefit from warmer weather. Other regions could be devastated by small increases in sea-level.
