Notes:
In 2008 in the District of Columbia v. Heller decision, the Supreme Court ruled that self-defense is a central component of the right. Prior to that many argued that only a militia could bear arms — not individuals.

The first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution are called the Bill of Rights. The Constitution would not have been ratified without them.
