The bulk of the commercial paper matures within 3 months. It is available in a wide range of denominations, can be either discounted or interest-bearing, and usually has a limited or non-existent secondary market. Commercial paper is usually issued by companies with high credit ratings and is commonly bought by Money market funds since the issuing amounts are often too high for individual investors.
