Consuming about 3,500 more calories than the body uses for energy will result in gaining an additional pound of fat. The caloric content of foods is often available on the food label.

Outside of nutrition, the term calorie is an antiquated measurement of energy that has largely been replaced by the joule. One calorie is equal to 4.1855 joules and is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree centigrade at atmospheric pressure.
