capital gains capital gain
Most people encounter capital gains for the first time when they sell stock or a home. Capital gains are often taxed at a different rate than wages because it is thought that the money with which the asset was purchased was taxed prior to purchasing the asset. For tax purposes, the gain is not "realized" until the asset is sold.
