  • In the afternoon the dark clouds began to overtake them: a sombre canopy with great billowing edges flecked with dazzling light.
  • Beyond it were slopes covered with sombre trees like dark clouds.
  • The great smokes had risen and grown thinner, and the last hours of a sombre day were passing; the red glare of Mordor had died away in sullen gloom.
