discovery — as in:  the discovery phase of the trial

During pre-trial discovery, each party may require the other to answer written interrogatories.
law:  compulsory pretrial disclosure of documents relevant to a case; enables one side in a litigation to elicit information from the other side concerning the facts in the case

More commonly, discovery refers to learning something new or to the thing that was learned.
