baffle — as in:  baffled him

She looked baffled by the question.
to completely confuse someone
baffle — as in:  acoustic baffle

The car’s tail pipe has an acoustic baffle to reduce noise.
something constructed to control the flow of sound or fluid

Less commonly, baffles is used to describe the area in the water directly behind a submarine or ship where hull-mounted sonar cannot hear because of the dynamic of ship design and water flow.

Even less commonly there are other technical uses of the word baffle relating to medicine, heat transfer, and mechanics.
