Multiple Meanings
common law

The United States inherited its common law from Great Britain.
a system of jurisprudence based on judicial precedents rather than statutory laws; (also called "case law")

This is sometimes seen in an expression such as common law marriage which means a couple that has lived together a long time like a husband and wife, are considered married under common law even though they never had a wedding ceremony.
