Multiple Meanings
denomination — as in:  the Baptist denomination

Downtown synagogues, mosques and churches of various denominations joined to assist the homeless.
a group of religious congregations (such as churches, temples, masques...) sharing distinctive beliefs and belonging to the same organization

or more rarely (and less formally):  any categorization of people
denomination — as in:  bills of a large denomination

She flashed a fistful of bills of large denominations.
a shared value printed on different pieces of currency — such as $20 bills

or more rarely:  a unit of measure belonging to other systems of measurement

Much more rarely, denomination can be used to refer to a non-measurement categorization such as all the diamonds in a deck of cards. Even more rarely, it can refer to the act of assigning something to a category.
