yoke — as in:  the yoke of bondage

They threw off the yoke of slavery.
an oppressive burden

Yoke is pronounced the same as yolk (the yellow part of an egg).

Yoke, as defined here, is a figurative sense of a more literal meaning; i.e., of a wooden frame used to carry loads or to join beasts of burden. More rarely, yoke describes a connected pair as in "a yoke of oxen". See a comprehensive dictionary for less common senses of the word.
