Multiple Meanings
interlude

during a brief interlude between games on college football Saturday
a short period with an activity different than that occurring during longer periods before or after it

or:

music:  brief music played between longer sections of a musical work

More rarely, an interlude may not be shorter than the periods surrounding it, but may be less significant, as in "the quiet summer interlude between political conventions." Even more rarely, an interlude can specifically reference a brief theatrical or musical entertainment performed between acts of a play.
