Multiple Meanings
ferment — as in:  ferment grapes

We ferment the grapes longer to achieve higher alcohol content.
chemically change by a living agent — much as yeast or bacteria changes sugar to alcohol when making wine
ferment — as in:  political party in ferment

The political ferment produced new leadership.
causing or stirring up excited disagreement — often leading to violence or change

or more rarely:  a state of excited disagreement

More rarely, fermentation can reference anything developing in a complex environment.
